The Story of Sturgeon Marking Project Manitoba
The Sturgeon Marking Project began in 2021 by the Interchurch Council on Hydropower. In its first year, the group brought together people from around Manitoba and stenciled just over 300 hydro poles throughout the province.
The Sturgeon Marking Project is an awareness campaign bringing attention to the impact of hydro generation on rivers, habitats and livelihoods at the other end of the line.
Similar to storm drain marking projects in other provinces, we believe that stenciling the image of a sturgeon on hydro poles throughout neighbourhoods in Manitoba will serve as a reminder for us:
That we are inter-connected with what we consume.
Our hope is that the sturgeon symbol will broaden our lens and remind us that we are all intrinsically connected.
